Komiža is a small fishermen's townlet, about 10 km distant from the town of Vis. It is situated at the foot of the Hum hill (587m) at the south-western side of the island of Vis. It will inspire your enthusiasm by its charm, rich cultural heritage and its excellent food and wines. Among many specialities we can emphasise the Komiža flat cake with salted anchovies, that simply must be tried. In the building of the so called Commune, a Renaissance palace from 16th C. you can visit the Fishing Museum. There are also numerous old churches worth visiting. Among them St. Nicola's Church or the Muster, standing on top of a hill and protecting seamen and fishermen from the high above, is particularly outstanding. Off the Komiža port, there are several renowned islands of the Vis archipelago: Biševo with its well known Blue Grotto, Svetac (Saint Andrew) – the former dwelling of the Mediterranean she-bear, the volcanic islands of Jabuka and Brusnik and a myriad of smaller islets. Accommodation in the town of Komiža is advisible for the guests looking for all the facilities at hand. There are some nice pebbly beaches close to the centre of the town, so vacation is suitable for those guests that come without their cars or avoid using them. There is a regular bus line and private taxis connecting Komiža with Vis and unavoidable picturesque places in the interior of the island.
